Tahiti
No crowds. no compromise.
Tahiti sportfishing vacations
I don’t use the word “untouched” lightly. I’ve seen a lot of places that call themselves remote and turn out to have three other charter boats on the horizon by 7am. Tahiti is different. When you’re out on the atolls, there is genuinely nothing out there but you, the water, and the fish. No hotels behind you on the shore because there are no hotels. No other boats because almost nobody knows to come here. The fish behave accordingly, aggressive, unconditioned, and completely unpredictable in the best possible way.
French Polynesia sits almost exactly in the middle of the South Pacific, surrounded by some of the most biologically rich water on earth. The atolls, flat rings of coral barely above sea level, enclosing enormous turquoise lagoons, create a unique environment where marlin, wahoo, dorado, and tuna concentrate in numbers that don’t make sense until you see them. The water is so clear you can watch fish respond to the lure before they commit. It’s a different kind of fishing than anything I do elsewhere, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment.
This is the trip for the angler who’s already experienced remote fishing and wants to go further. If Costa Rica showed you what’s possible, Tahiti shows you what’s left.

A Place Most Anglers Have Never Heard Of.
The Atoll
An atoll is a coral ring enclosing a vast, shallow lagoon, and Apataki is a big one. The outer reef drops off sharply into deep Pacific water where marlin and wahoo hunt. Inside the lagoon, the clarity is extraordinary, turquoise water over white sand, with fish visible from the surface. Passes through the reef create ripping currents that concentrate bait and everything that feeds on it. When the tide is running through a pass, the fishing can be almost overwhelming. I’ve seen days out here that I genuinely couldn’t have predicted, and I’ve been doing this for 40 years.
The Setting
The Tuamotu atolls sit so low to the ocean that from a distance they’re nearly invisible, just a thin green line on the horizon and a color change in the water. There’s no infrastructure, no tourist apparatus, no noise other than the wind and the birds. The stars at night are something else entirely. People come back from Tahiti talking about the fishing, but they also talk about what it feels like to be genuinely that far from everything. Both are worth the trip.
Fish Species
One of the reasons Costa Rica works so well for first-timers is the variety. There’s no such thing as a slow day on the southern Pacific, if one thing isn’t biting, something else always is.
Blue Marlin
The deep water outside the reef holds trophy-class blue marlin. With no fishing pressure and rich feeding grounds, these fish are in exceptional condition.
OFFSHORE · BIG GAME
Wahoo
Tahiti produces some of the best wahoo fishing I’ve encountered anywhere. Fast water, big fish, and they hit hard. The passes between lagoon and ocean are particularly productive.
OFFSHORE · PELAGIC
Yellowfin Tuna
Schools of yellowfin move through consistently, drawn by the bait concentrations around the atoll. Expect serious fish in serious numbers.
OFFSHORE · PELAGIC
Mahi Mahi
Brilliant, fast, and plentiful around the atoll structure. If you want to put someone new to offshore fishing onto fish quickly, dorado are almost always there.
OFFSHORE · PELAGIC
Giant Trevally
Inside the lagoon and in the passes, GT fishing is extraordinary. Pound for pound one of the most powerful fish you’ll fight anywhere, and they go absolutely berserk in shallow water
LAGOON · GAMEFISH
Exotic Species
The Golfo Dulce’s mangrove-lined shores and reefs hold hard-fighting bottom species that round out a full day’s variety.

★★★★★
“Tahiti was a dream. No other anglers, no tourists, just us, the atolls, and a truly world-class fishery. The kind of trip you plan the next one before you’ve left.”
