Galapagos

Extraordinary waters. Extraordinary fish.

Galapagos sportfishing vacations

When I tell people what the Galapagos is like, there’s usually a pause. Thirty to fifty striped marlin sightings in a day sounds like an exaggeration. It isn’t. The nutrient-rich currents that collide around these islands, the Humboldt from the south, the Panama Flow from the north, create a feeding environment that concentrates baitfish and the billfish that follow them in numbers I’ve never encountered anywhere else on earth. Not even close.

Striped marlin are the most acrobatic billfish you can target. When they’re hot they tail-walk, they greyhound, they do things that make experienced anglers forget to breathe. And in the Galapagos, on the right day, you will see more of them in a single morning than most anglers see in a lifetime of fishing.

Blue marlin and black marlin round out the picture. These are serious fish in serious numbers, in a place that is unlike anywhere else on the planet, both above the waterline and below it. Fishing here is done in careful partnership with Galapagos National Park, which means strict catch-and-release and responsible practices that protect one of the world’s most remarkable ecosystems. That’s not a compromise, it’s the right way to fish a place this special.

This is the trip for the angler who has done everything else and wants to know what the best in the world actually looks like.

Where Three Marlin Species Converge in the Same Water.

San Cristobal is the easternmost island in the Galapagos archipelago and the closest to the deep offshore banks where the marlin run. It’s where I base operations, and where the fishing happens.

The Banks

The deep-sea banks off San Cristobal sit at the intersection of ocean currents that don’t meet anywhere else on earth. The Humboldt Current sweeps up cold, nutrient-rich water from the south. The warmer Panama Flow pushes down from the north. Where they meet, baitfish stack in extraordinary concentrations, and the striped marlin follow. On a good day the water surface tells the whole story before you’ve even put a line in: birds working, bait busting, fins cutting the surface in every direction.

The Islands

The Galapagos Islands are what they are because they’ve been largely protected from human interference for decades. The same isolation that gave Darwin his insights gives these waters their extraordinary productivity. Marine iguanas. Sea lions sleeping on the dock. Hammerhead sharks in the channel. The fishing is remarkable, but so is the reminder that you’re somewhere genuinely unlike anywhere else on the planet.

Fish Species

The Galapagos is a big game destination, full stop. The species list is short and the quality is extraordinary.

Striped Marlin

The signature species of the Galapagos, the most acrobatic billfish alive. In peak conditions you’ll see 30 to 50 in a day. They tail-walk, greyhound, and put on a show that experienced anglers still talk about years later. Catch-and-release only.

OFFSHORE · BIG GAME

Blue Marlin

Trophy-class blue marlin run these banks in numbers that don’t exist anywhere else in the Pacific. Larger and more powerful than striped marlin, when one comes up on a lure it gets very quiet on the boat

OFFSHORE · BIG GAME

Black Marlin

The heaviest of the three. Black marlin in the Galapagos are a genuine trophy-hunting target for serious big game anglers. Powerful, unpredictable, and unforgettable.

“Warren, we had a great time fishing with you. Three of the four of us caught the biggest fish they had ever caught. You are a very knowledgeable captain and I enjoyed the whole experience. I have told all my friends about the experience and showed off the pictures we are all proud of. Look forward to fishing with you again.”
